New Faculty Orientation - Part 1, Welcome to Dawson

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµâ€™s New Faculty Orientation – Part 1 is designed to welcome new faculty to the CEGEP teaching environment. It includes information about college personnel, services and procedures, the pedagogical context of CEGEP and teaching at the college level.

The session includes videos to watch in preparation, and an in-person workshop component.

  • Academic integrity at Dawson

  • Faculty roles and responsibilities
  • Classroom scenarios and discussion

New Faculty Orientation - Part 2, From Learning Outcomes to Assessments

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµâ€™s New Faculty Orientation – Part 2 builds on the foundations of competency-based programs and the program approach, discussed in the first session. It uses the backwards design framework to identify learning outcomes and consider assessments that align with the course and program requirements.

The session includes a video to watch in preparation, and an in-person workshop component.

Topics include:

  • Institutional Student Evaluation Policy
  • The Backwards Design framework
  • Learning Outcomes 
  • Types of assessments
  • Inclusive and rigorous assessments
  • Evaluating fairly using rubrics

New Faculty Orientation - Part 3, From Assessments to Learning Activities

Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµâ€™s New Faculty Orientation – Part 3 continues to build on previous sessions and draws on the backwards design framework to focus on learning activities that gradually build towards the assessments. We consider what we can learn about lessons and activity design from cognitive psychological research, empirical education studies, and the classroom practices of successful teachers.

Topics include:

  • Working with ‘cognitive load’
  • Evidence-based principles of instruction 
  • Activities that foster learning
  • Best practices for lesson planning

This event is open to all new Day and Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµÂ faculty with confirmed upcoming workload.
