This course offers an in-depth look into the variety of professional roles for graduates of the Administration Management Technology Program, focusing on skills, responsibilities, career prospects and the development of professional communication and presentation skills. Students will assess their suitability for this career through self-evaluation and participate in activities to prepare for business roles. A core component of the course is learning to communicate effectively with business professionals in the context of networking, informational interviews, and mock job interviews for potential roles in the field. Students will gain experience researching organizations, their objectives and business roles, and presenting confidently. By course end, participants will have a clear understanding of the various job prospects for entry level positions in business and honed key professional skills.

Course Description:

In this course students will focus on learning software that are used in the business environment, learning the technical aspects of producing professional content. They will begin with learning how to manage a computer as well as IT security rules. The course will also focus on how to produce written professional content using Word. Students will learn how to write and edit texts, format a document and automate operations to ensure professional presentation of the content. On the visual side, students will focus on learning PowerPoint as the software to create visually appealing and relevant content for an organization. They will learn how to collect, create and process visual elements together with how to create complex layouts. Students will also be introduced to collaborate software such as Teams and SharePoint. The goal of the course is to give students a strong technical base on this software for application to business scenarios in future classes.

This course is about understanding and developing soft skills (people skills) that are crucial for successful interpersonal relations in the workplace. ‘Effective communication’ is at the heart of this skill set and involves many variables (not just the words) that can influence the understanding of interpersonal messages. In this context, components of active listening, perception, feedback, etc., will be explored, together with consideration to adapting messages for different types of audiences and various cultural and social settings. For online communications, the selection of suitable digital tools and online platforms will be considered, along with the importance of proper etiquette for online posts and discussions. This course also incorporates how to adapt to different work situations including how to effectively collaborate in a team. As such, the complexities and benefits of team dynamics will be experienced through various team activities.

In this course students will be introduced to the world of marketing. They will learn to describe an organization’s mission, their main products (goods or services) and their target market. They will learn to identify the external factors (such as social, political, economic, legal, technological, competition, etc.) that can affect an organization. They will also learn about the marketing mix of an organization using monitoring tools, and its link to the external factors. Students will apply these learnings to a business scenario, where they will also select the digital tools that are required to communicate with the target market and make recommendations for future actions.

This introductory course in law and contracts offers students an overview of key legal concepts and their relevance to business, including the differences between common and civil law, as well as the application of provincial versus federal jurisdiction differences. Students will learn to assess and determine the optimal legal form of business. Students will explore various types of contracts such as sales, leases and mandates and gain an understanding of how law operates within a business context. The course delves into the principles of contract law, covering topics like liability, employment agreements and supplier contracts. Additionally, students will examine the tendering process, including promise to purchase, offer and acceptance, and their applications in both private and public sectors. Through practical analysis students will explore the legal consequences of failing to fulfill contractual obligations, providing them with insights into the real-world impact of contract law.

Course Description:

This course explores the significance of the role of a manager when taking on the responsibility of managing people (a work team). Since managers depend on those who are under their charge to achieve results, the course will provide the insight needed to understand, influence, and manage employees, as well as to evaluate their work performance. By examining various contexts and situations of how different leadership styles can affect employee productivity and job satisfaction, as well as how aspects of motivation and other key personality variables can drive employees, students will contemplate feasible approaches/solutions to managing people, while also anticipating the possible consequences of their decisions/choices. Consideration for legal aspects relating to managing workplace conduct (including employee discipline), as well as health & safety practices, and labour relation policies (in unionized environments) will also be explored.
