Students will expand their knowledge of molecular genetics while discovering the tools of genetic analysis and engineering. Students will explore major applications of biotechnology in medicine, agriculture, environmental science, and industry. In addition, students will also explore the impacts and ethical concerns involved in using biotechnology in these fields. Laboratory exercises will help to complement topics discussed in lectures and give students practical experience in DNA technology and other areas of biotechnology.

This course explores the interactions among organisms and their environment. Students will learn to describe and explain the ecological processes that influence the distribution and abundance of organisms at both population and community levels. Key topics include population dynamics, species interactions, and applied ecology, such as disease ecology, climate change impacts, and conservation strategies. Students will also develop practical field skills in data collection, analysis, and interpretation of ecological data collected during the course or provided by the instructors. This course is taken in association with Phys Ed 103 (Wilderness Camping) and includes a compulsory five-day field trip. Students will camp for two nights before transitioning to biology labs for the remaining 2.5 days. The camping portion takes place entirely outdoors, while the biology component consists of full-day outdoor labs. Dormitory accommodations will be provided for two nights.

Geology is the science that studies the Earth – how it formed, the materials it is composed of and the processes acting upon it. Physical Geology examines the geologic time scale (and associated changes, organisms and climates), minerals, rocks, the rock cycle, water resources, plate tectonics, and surface/subsurface processes (e.g., volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides). Physical Geology also introduces and discusses the Anthropocene – how humans have impacted Earth and the impact geological processes have on societies and natural environments. Mythology, legend and artwork inspired by various geological phenomena and structures will also be presented. Lectures will investigate geological theory and laboratory sessions (including field work on and around Mount Royal) will focus on practical and research exercises. NOTE: This course provides credits towards the SPACE: Arts and Sciences Certificate and the Environment and Sustainability Certificate.

This course is a well-rounded introduction to what is outside planet Earth. In this course, students learn how celestial objects and man-made space probes move via Universal Gravity and orbital mechanics. They learn about the celestial clockwork: the daily and yearly apparent motion of the sun and the stars. They learn how time, time units and calendars are defined based on the celestial clockwork. They learn about stellar evolution and about how the cores of dead stars turn into exotic compact objects such as black holes. They learn to be scientific detectives by extracting as much information as possible from the dots of light that we see in the sky. The course is concluded with a brief overview of the large-scale structure of the universe.

Medical physics applies basic principles of electricity, magnetism, waves, and modern physics to “see” inside the human body and treat a large variety of conditions. This course will explore several imaging and treatments modalities used in neuroscience and medicine, both in the clinic and in research. Students will develop mini-projects using either electroencephalogram devices to probe the electric field produced by the brain, or ultrasound devices to study tissues and blood flow. They will also learn the basics of analyzing images of the human body. Topics may include modalities in magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, x-rays and computed tomography (CT scans), radioactive tracers, radiation therapy, and fluorescent lifetime imaging microscopy.
