Course Description:

This course is the first of two that are designed to introduce the student to the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology of all human body systems. Physiological and anatomical terminology are introduced as well as important biological concepts such as homeostasis. The basics of cell structure and function are discussed with emphasis on the cellular organelles, cell cycle, and meiotic cell division. The main focus of this course is both the physiology and three-dimensional anatomy (with respect to locations, surface landmarks, vasculature, and surrounding structures) of the nervous, endocrine, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.

Course Description:

This interactive course introduces students to recognize the professional implications, the legal issues and their role within the framework of the medical ultrasound profession. Students will also reflect on their personal career choice and familiarize themselves with the structure of the medical ultrasound technology program. Students will learn to identify legislative requirements of federal and provincial laws that govern the profession of ultrasound technologists. Furthermore, students will examine the skills and behaviours related to the role of their profession while exploring their function within a multidisciplinary team. Finally, the student will understand their responsibilities as future medical ultrasound technologists and the expectations of the job market.

Course Description:

In this hands-on course, students learn about safety, hygiene, effective measures for infection control and emergency protocols. Students will also begin learning the fundamental skills of patient management and the importance of communication within the ultrasound profession. Students will apply the governing regulations to the overall health of patients and healthcare professionals. Students will learn to recognize the risks and dangers associated with the professional practice. Finally, students will apply ergonomic work methods and learn relevant clinical terminology. This course will prime students for the Patient Care and Pharmacology course.

Course Description:

This interactive course introduces students to instrumentation principles and various modes of acquisition while ensuring patient safety. Students will learn to integrate the theoretical knowledge learned in physics of ultrasound and apply it to the machine to enhance and improve their ultrasound images. Students will explore elements of a quality assurance program and will introduce general quality control practices. Finally, they will archive data and be introduced to various diagnostic imaging modalities. This course will prime students for the Instrumentation and Quality Control course.

Course Description:

This is an introductory physics course focused on medical ultrasound imaging. Topics include: Sound as a wave, transducer physics, interactions with tissue, Doppler effect, ultrasound safety, and other imaging modalities. Students will learn: to connect the principles of sound waves to ultrasound signal production and detection, how the Doppler Effect is used to create Doppler ultrasound images, to connect the principles of energy absorption and attenuation to ultrasound safety. Following completion of this course, students will be prepared to take Instrumentation II.

Course Description:

This course is the second of two courses designed to introduce the student to the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology of all human body systems. The main focus of this course is both the physiology and three-dimensional anatomy (with respect to locations, surface landmarks, vasculature and surrounding structures) of the skeletal, muscle, cardiovascular, respiratory and lymphatic systems. The students will also cover the basics of genetics and immunity. The final part of the course focuses on the major milestones of fetal development.

Course Description:

This interactive course further expands on the use of ultrasound instrumentation principles and various modes of acquisition. Applying knowledge developed in physics and instrumentation, students will learn to use advanced reconstruction software and tools to optimize ultrasound images. Students will further explore elements of a quality assurance program and will perform general quality control tests of devices and accessories. Students will document and analyze the results while referring to appropriate quality control documents. Also, they will explore documentation workflow in the ultrasound department, including the Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). This course will prime students for the application of these principles and procedures in the context of Clinical Education.

In this hands-on scanning course, students will learn how to plan for a general abdomen and pelvis examination. Applying knowledge developed in anatomy, physiology, patient care, and instrumentation, students will learn to effectively acquire the proper diagnostic images and data while utilizing effective scanning techniques. They will incorporate their anatomy and physiology knowledge to analyze images and identify basic pathologies. Also, they will begin to acquire the skills to describe, transmit and record important findings during a general abdomen and pelvis examination. This course will prime students for the further application of these principles and procedures in Abdominal, Pelvic and Surface Ultrasound 2.

This interactive course introduces students to the basic principles and procedures of patient medical records. Applying knowledge developed in anatomy, physiology, patient care, and fundamentals of the profession, students will learn to correlate relevant medical data to the examination to be performed. They will also learn to identify common pathologies seen in various imaging modalities. Also, they will begin to acquire the skills to describe, transmit and record important findings during an ultrasound examination or procedure. This course will prime students for the application of these principles and procedures in the context of Clinical Education.

Course Description:

Through the course Communication and Well-being in the Medical Ultrasound Profession, students will gain knowledge and skills to become effective communicators as future medical ultrasound technologists. The elements of interpersonal communication, the impact of diversity on communication, as well as active listening will be explored, incorporating elements of trauma-informed practice and emphasizing cultural sensitivity and competence. Expressing oneself assertively to meet one's own needs while being “other-oriented” and respecting the needs and rights of others will be practiced. An important part of the course is to develop more awareness of oneself as a communicator, and students will learn to assess their own communication style and the impact of this style on others. Students will learn principles of self and collective care as well as management of professional boundaries to prevent risks of harm and promote ethical practice in the workplace.

Applying knowledge developed in anatomy, physiology, patient care and instrumentation, students will learn to effectively acquire the proper diagnostic images and data while utilizing effective scanning techniques. They will incorporate their anatomy and physiology knowledge to analyze images and identify basic pathologies. Also, they will begin to acquire the skills to describe, transmit and record important findings during an Obstetrical and Gynecological examination. This course will prime students for the further application of these principles and procedures in Obstetrical and Gynecological Ultrasound 2.

They will also learn the common interventional procedures specific to this course. This course will prime students for the application of these principles and procedures in the context of Clinical Education.

Course Description:

At the end of this project-based course, the student will recognize the role of the technologist in protocol assessment, teaching, research, and professional development in the ultrasound field. The student will explore research methods, data acquisition and the legislative requirements they entail. This course will reinforce teamwork, explore methods of presentation and further develop the importance of transferring knowledge to their colleagues and to their community. It also examines the role of protocols and working documents in an ultrasound department and their need to be updated. Finally, the student will reflect on their responsibilities and their limitations as a future medical ultrasound technologist in the developing profession.

They will learn to adapt to various clinical situations, patients, and pathologies while maintaining the professional standards of the ultrasound profession. They will further enhance their specialized skills in multiple ultrasound modalities (General, Vascular, Cardiac, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology). They will also assist in the common interventional procedures in these sectors. This course will provide students with an introduction to the professional setting.

They will further enhance their specialized skills in multiple ultrasound modalities (General, Vascular, Cardiac, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology).  They will also assist in the common interventional procedures in these sectors.  This course will provide the students with the skills to be competent in the clinical setting.

They will further enhance their specialized skills in multiple sub-sectors of ultrasound (Abdomen/General/Pediatrics, Breast, and Vascular).  They will also assist in the common interventional procedures in these sectors.  This course will prime students for entry into the profession.

They will further enhance their specialized skills in multiple sub-sectors of ultrasound (Cardiac - Adult and Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology). They will also assist in the common interventional procedures in these sectors.  This course will prime students for entry into the profession.

Course Description:

This course allows students to revisit the essential notions of all the specific education courses completed in the first 5 terms of the program. Students will have the opportunity to integrate the knowledge gained from their clinical courses and make connections with the program competencies. They will also be able to review and reflect on the OTIMROEPMQ's standards of practice and the program's Exit Profile. Students will analyze different case studies in each of the specialties, think critically and critique images. The goal is to adequately prepare the students for the professional entrance exam and the tasks of ultrasound technologists in the working environment. In this 6th term course, students will also complete a portion of the Comprehensive Examination, which is required to successfully complete the program.
