Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to give the student the essentials of anatomy and physiology of all human body systems as they pertain to Radiation Oncology. The structure and function of cells are discussed with an emphasis on the cell cycle and cell division (mitosis and meiosis). All human anatomical systems are described concerning location, surface landmarks, and surrounding structures. The physiology of all systems is described with particular attention given to the skeletal, nervous, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems.

This course is designed to introduce aspects of the Radiation Oncology discipline at an elementary level. The Introduction to the Profession course is a planned educational experience designed to: analyze the profession, learn to work in a health care environment, and interact with a multidisciplinary team, patients and public.

Course Description:

This course allows the student to anticipate and evaluate all health-and-safety risks in the workplace and to suggest appropriate actions to prevent and/or correct problems in Radiation Oncology. Also, the student becomes familiar with the management of side effects. The course introduces and develops ethical standards, professional responsibilities, communication, and finally methods of prevention and resolution in interpersonal interactions that may be encountered in the health care environment.

Course Description:

This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of anatomy used in treatment planning: critical structures, target volumes and organs at risk (OARs) will be contoured using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRR's).

Course Description:

This course is designed to give the student a basic comprehension of applied principles of imaging modalities and techniques in Radiation Oncology. The student will learn the importance of immobilization and supporting apparatus involved in the planning and treatment setup. The student will also learn how to safely use medical imaging and apparatus and systems to capture, match planning to treatment images and to optimize images.

Course Description:

This course is the first of two courses intended to allow the student to gain an understanding of anatomy, physiology, histology, etiology, epidemiology, pathology, and staging related to the cancer patient. The students will study the spread of disease, role of the lymphatic system, characteristics of normal and malignant cells, and clinical history and presentation. The student will also learn about the safety and the radiobiological effects on tissue including the principles of fractionation. Finally, the students will learn of the various treatment modalities, the prescription and basic principles of pharmacology.

Course Description:

This course gives the students a basic comprehension of radiobiology and safety. The students will learn principles of radiation protection as applied to people, the environment and the equipment. The students will also gain an understanding of risks and effects on the body associated to radiation exposure with an emphasis on the sequence of events in the cells, tissues, organs and systems that occur following absorption of radiation.

This course familiarizes the student with the principles of the various apparatus in radiotherapy. The student learns to apply radiation safety principles and effective use of the equipment in radiotherapy including brachytherapy. The course will also explore emerging technologies within the context of planning and treatment apparatus.

Course Description:

The Principles of Oncology 2 completes the competencies introduced in the Principles Oncology 1 course including the introduction to the principles of cancer diagnosis and further develops the cancer management and treatment modalities. The student will further develop specific clinical applications in the consideration of the cancer treatment approach.

Upon completion of the course, the students will have learned how to perform effective radiation protection as applied to the patient, the public and themselves. This course gives the student knowledge and understanding of the basics of radiation protection and safety in respect to room design, understanding the risks and effects on the body associated to radiation exposure. The students will also explore emerging technologies in regards to treatment and planning equipment.

This course is the second of the two Patient Care courses in Radiation Oncology, which is designed to further develop aspects in professional responsibilities, communication, patient care, safety, and the patient preparation for imaging interventions requiring contrast.

Course Description:

This Applied Dosimetry course deals with radiation dosimetry and concentrates on beam measurement techniques, quality assurance issues in treatment planning, as well as the special techniques used in treatment planning and delivery. The basic quantities and units used in dosimetry are discussed in detail and their application in the calculation of clinical dose distributions is explained. The course starts with a discussion of single photon beams and progresses through dose distributions obtained with multiple photon beams to electron beams and dosimetry in brachytherapy. Students will produce and evaluate clinical treatment plans.

In a simulated environment, the Treatment Application 2 course will allow students to safely practice and perform the treatment process by performing QA procedures on all apparatus in the room as well as monitoring devices, preparing the room and patient for the procedure, aligning and administering treatment in a simulated environment.

This course will integrate all knowledge attained in the program, and will prepare the student for the professional entrance exam and the workforce. The main goal is to review and reflect on the OTIMROEPMQ Standards of Practice, Entry Profile to the Profession, and the CAMRT Competency Profile. The course also includes lectures, workshops and presentations that will prepare the student for the profession such as: CV writing, the job interview process, the OTIMROEPMQ professional order, Hope and Cope patient support services, nursing and patient care services in Radiation Oncology.
