Course Description:

The goal of the course is to help students understand and analyze how social problems affecting individuals, families, and communities connect to political, economic, historical, and social forces. Some of these macro social problems include poverty, social exclusion, inequality, and violence. In sociology, students examine these as structural problems embedded in the fabric of society. We will examine how society is organized and structured, focusing on topics directly related to social service work (how do social systems shaped by colonial histories lead to forms of violence against Indigenous Peoples? Negative impacts of patriarchal structures, how racism, sexism, and classism are institutionalized, and more). Applying various sociological theories and perspectives, students will compare and contrast public and governmental responses to these social problems and assess the obstacles and successes in addressing them.

Course Description:

This course introduces you to the practice of Social Service Work. It aims to identify, examine and describe the various contexts, characteristics, standards, and scope of social service practice. Social Service Worker roles, goals, knowledge, interventions, values and ethics integral to practice will be examined and applied to practice examples. This course will introduce concepts such as social location, intersectionality, and Social Service Workers as agents for social change. Students will learn how Social Service Work links with other helping professions and examine how interprofessional collaboration can enhance service delivery. Students will develop an understanding of the roles and functions of the Social Service Worker in the helping process and recognize and describe the steps in the intervention process, with a focus on professional ethics, responsibility, and accountability. Students will also learn about the diverse settings where Social Service Workers practice.

Course Description:

In this 75-hour course, students will develop an understanding of communication theory and the communication skills that are essential to the helping relationships they will be forming in their training as future Social Service workers working with children and young adults. The elements of interpersonal communication, the impact of one’s social location on communication, and interviewing techniques such as nonviolent communication, rapport-building, conflict resolution skills, attending skills, paraphrasing, and empathizing will be addressed. Students will reflect on their own communication style and the impact it has on others. This self-awareness will lead to effective communication with individuals, groups, and teams in addition to the ability to provide and incorporate feedback into a reflexive and reflective practice. The focus of the course will be on individuals aged from childhood to young adulthood.

Course Description:

This course will focus on needs assessment from birth to adolescence. Through case studies and role-plays, students will be able to identify and describe different developmental levels and associated needs for individuals based on a biopsychosocial model. Students will learn how to complete a bias-free needs assessment considering the individual’s developmental stage, social location, individual strengths, and the resources available to them. As part of their assessment, students will gather information from other professionals, family, and significant persons in the individual’s life. They will learn to validate their assessment with the client using role-play situations. Students will also learn how to make referrals to appropriate organizations which address the specific developmental and biopsychosocial needs identified. Students will gather information about different types of resources and services available to persons of diverse backgrounds and experiences.

This 75-hour advanced course builds upon the foundational skills acquired in Professional Communication and Relationship Skills I, offering students in the Social Service program an in-depth exploration of essential interpersonal competencies and effective interviewing techniques required for successful engagement in the field with different client populations. Participants will further develop their abilities to communicate effectively with a diverse client population, build strong professional relationships, and navigate challenging interpersonal dynamics within the context of social service settings while considering ethical considerations. Students will explore personal and professional values and identify, describe, and process value conflicts and ethical dilemmas based on case examples from the field. They will also have the opportunity to reflect on and appraise their ability to carry out each step of the interview process and the skills used.

Course Description:

As an extension to Needs Assessment Throughout the Lifespan I, this course will focus on needs assessment from young adulthood to older adults. Using complex case studies and role-plays, students will be able to complete a thorough needs assessment for an individual seeking help for a given problem. The needs assessment will focus on the individual’s developmental and life cycle stages, social location, individual strengths, and the impact of Social Determinants of Health on needs fulfillment. Students will formulate a comprehensive, non-biased needs assessment. Students will assess resources currently available to the client, including extended family and community support. Based on the needs assessment, they will propose additional interventions and resources and determine where advocacy may be required for the client to access services.

Course Description:

This course will examine past and current social policy, legislation, and political, social, and economic systems in Quebec and Canada and describe their impacts for individuals, groups, and communities from a structural perspective. The colonial structures on which provincial and federal social welfare systems and policies have been built will be critically analyzed. The course will explore the link between social welfare policy and the social problems of poverty, violence, exclusion, and social inequality. An emphasis on how knowledge about social welfare systems informs social service responses to these social problems, with a focus on human rights, empowerment, advocacy, and activism, will also be examined. Proposed Social Service interventions to address the impact of programs and policies built on dominant social values will be explored using anti-racist, anti-oppressive, intersectional, trauma-informed, Indigenous, and feminist approaches.

Course Description:

In this course, students will develop competencies to work efficiently in a team in the context of a group intervention project where they will be asked to assess and address the needs of a group or community. They will learn how to manage a team process, using communication and conflict resolution skills, and to take on specific roles and responsibilities to achieve their goals. Students will be given the opportunity to animate and co-animate a team meeting to apply their learning in terms of planning, opening, running, and closing a meeting. Collectively, students will apply theory on group development, facilitation, cohesion, and dynamics to create a simulated intervention group to meet the needs of a given population. With a focus on inclusive practices, they will rely on their learning about different types of groups and their needs assessment to determine which type of group they will propose. Simulated group intervention sessions will be used to demonstrate group work skills.

Course Description:

This course is designed for aspiring social service professionals to develop a comprehensive understanding of mental health within diverse populations. This course equips students with the knowledge and skills to address these issues effectively in their practice. Students will gain an understanding of various mental health disorders, their symptoms and how these might manifest physically. Students will examine mood disorders, anxiety, schizophrenia, specific learning disorders, neurodivergence, post-traumatic stress disorder, and the social and personal impacts of addiction, etc. Students will explore the causes, complexities of dual diagnoses, treatment options, as well as the implications for individuals and communities. This course focuses on assessing and identifying individuals' strengths and adaptive capabilities. Students will learn to develop personalized intervention strategies that leverage these strengths to improve health outcomes through a holistic approach.

Course Description:

Fieldwork I is comprised of Fieldwork and Seminar. In fieldwork, students will engage in a practice experience where they will apply knowledge, skills, and professional values developed in Year 1. This will involve establishing a helping relationship with members of the community served by the organization, assessing their needs, proposing interventions, and referring them to appropriate resources. Students will also collaborate and carry out tasks as active members of a team, learn about safety protocols, and process ethical issues through discussions with their supervisor. In Seminar, students will learn to identify risks inherent to practice in the field and develop the means to protect their physical and psychological integrity when in their field setting. As part of a peer group, they will engage in clinical discussions relating to their experience in the field which will include analyzing ethical issues, processing team conflict, and practising self and collective care

Course Description:

In this course, students will assess the needs of the family using assessment models and tools learned in Needs Assessment Throughout the Lifespan I & II, while incorporating new knowledge relating to family communication, dynamics, and life transitions. They will learn to collect information about the family system and consider the impact of social problems on family functioning. Including an examination of family violence, i.e. intimate partner violence, child abuse and neglect, and abuse towards older adults and interventions to prevent or to address family violence. Students will learn about the duty to report cases of mistreatment of vulnerable family members, including children and older adults. Case studies, role-plays and simulations will be used for students to assess and report on the needs and strengths of a family, family dynamics, family functioning and instances of violence or neglect, and propose possible interventions and resources.

Intervention Techniques I is a foundational course designed to equip students with essential attitudes, skills and knowledge in identifying, describing, and addressing physical and mental health problems, social issues, and crisis situations within the context and scope of social service practice. Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical application, students will develop competencies necessary for effective intervention and support to individuals. Throughout the course, students will also explore risk and protective factors, structural issues impacting populations with physical and/or mental health challenges, ethical considerations, cultural humility, and the importance of collaboration with other professionals and community resources. By the end of the course, students will have a solid foundation in the principles and practices of social service intervention, preparing them for further study and fieldwork practice.

Course Description:

In this second Fieldwork course comprised of fieldwork and seminar, students will continue to apply the knowledge, skills, and professional values developed in the program to a practice setting, with a focus on assessing individual client functioning and needs and referring to appropriate internal or external resources. With support from their field supervisors, they will also assess and respond to ethical issues encountered in their interactions with clients. In Seminar, students will process and analyze their practice experiences through guided discussions centering on ethical challenges and protection of one’s physical and psychological integrity in relation to risks encountered in the field. Students will engage in planning and animating field discussions based on practice examples from their field setting, whereby they will present their assessment of the situation and seek feedback and guidance from their peer group.

Course Description:

In this course, students will build on their assessment and intervention knowledge and skills to assess a family’s social functioning and develop an intervention plan to address complex and evolving family situations involving crisis events, such as involvement with socio-legal systems. Students will learn to use various assessment tools to assess risk factors pertaining to socio-legal issues, to apply protective measures and intervention strategies, and to provide resources to meet family members’ needs. They will be able to describe the role of a Social Service worker in the accompaniment of families dealing with socio-legal systems such as Youth Protection System, the Public Curator, the Family Court System, the Immigration System, and the Youth Criminal Justice System, including collaboration with other professionals. Through simulations, role-plays, and case discussions, students will further develop their ability to affirm their professional opinion.

Course Description:

In this course, students will critically assess the systems of oppression (colonialism, racism, ableism, patriarchy, heterosexism, etc.) that pose a threat to universal human rights and create barriers for individuals, groups, and communities in their ability to access resources. Through an anti-oppressive practice lens, students will analyze the adequacy of government programs and policies intended to address problems of poverty, inequality, and exclusion. They will examine actions or acts of resistance by communities, community advocacy groups, and social movements to effect policy change. Relying on research and theory, students will be able to explain the different levels of oppression and how these are perpetuated within various systems (the education and justice systems, health and social services, etc.). Students will then develop an advocacy action plan that could be carried out with members of a given community to address systemic barriers and human rights issues.

In this course, which builds on Group Work Intervention and Intervention Techniques I, students will deepen their knowledge and further develop their intervention skills in the context of working with various groups facing challenges related to disabilities, mental or physical health, and crisis events such as grief, addiction, sociolegal issues, and intimate partner violence. They will assess and critically examine the collective needs of the group and the unique needs of individual members, form the type of group required, plan recruitment strategies, determine resource availability, and develop group sessions to meet the identified needs. They will determine clear intervention objectives, relying on knowledge of the realities faced by members, as well as on evidence-based approaches. In practice situations, they will learn how to negotiate boundaries, group dynamics, termination, and evaluation. This will allow them to reflect on their role as group organizers and facilitators.
